Passport and variations.

Ok, same drill as my subtracting basses post...

Start with "passport":
Code: Select all
1 . + . 2 . + .
s . . s s . t t
r . . l r . r l
This part is in a million tunes, take your pick...

Take away one slap, and you get an accompaniment part for Fe
Code: Select all
1 . + . 2 . + .
s . . s . . t t
r . . l . . r l
Go back to passport, double it up, and add a bass and you get an accompaniment for Djagbe (and others)
Code: Select all
1 . + . 2 . + . 3 . + . 4 . + .
s . . s s . t t s . b s s . t t
r . . l r . r l r . r l r . r l
Ok, this one is fun... cut passport in 1/2 and add a bass between each section and you get an accompaniment part for Fankani!
Code: Select all
1 . + . 2 . + . 3 . + . 4 . + .
s . . s s . b . s . t t s . b .
r . . l r . r . r . r l r . r .
finally, there is this part that's in my head, but I'm not sure what rhythm it would go to...? anyone?
Code: Select all
1 . + . 2 . + . 3 . + . 4 . + .
s . . s s . t t s . . b s . t t
r . . l r . r l r . . l r . r l
Ok, there's like 5 more parts, all related. I have one more group to post for 4/4 rhythms (based on Kassa if anyone want's to try and beat me to it (I'm looking at you michi!))

After that I take on 6/8 parts!

this is another one i like to do with it when i'm the only djembe player. adds a bit of funk.
Code: Select all
1 . . . 2 . . . 3 . . . 4 . . .
s . . s s . t t s . b s s b t t
r . . l r . r l r . r l r l r l

I have to admit that I'm at a loss as to what to do with Kassa. Do you mean the main accompaniment?
Code: Select all
1...2...3...4...
s.ss.stts.ss.stt
In that case, I'm at a loss as to where to put the basses (apart from the obvious spots) :)

An accompaniment that Mohamed teaches for Kassa Dibon goes like this:
Code: Select all
1...2...3...4...
t.ss..ss..ss..st
I guess that one could be used similarly to passport to fill in the unused slots with basses. Let's see... There are 7 unused slots, so that's 128 possible ways to add basses. I'm not at all sure that I would want to list them all here :)

There is also Mamady's accompaniment for Kassa Dibon.
Code: Select all
1...2...3...4...
ttss..s.ttssb.s.
But that one doesn't strike me as all that suitable.

Could you post a few of the patterns you had in mind?

Cheers,

Michi.

I've been using this pattern with added basses for a couple of years both as an exercise and as the basis for a djembe kan.

First variation:
Code: Select all
1...2...3...4...
ttss..s.ttssb.sb
I call this a 'cheeky bass' - one slotted into the last sub-pulse before the 1.

Second variation:
Code: Select all
1...2...3...4...
ttss..s.ttssbbsb
Plus one more I use:
Code: Select all
1...2...3...4...
ttss.bs.ttssb.sb
