Advice and questions on keeping your instruments in top form

Hey DjembeGurus,

I have this skin that seems fine, except for three little spots right on the playing surface. Are these tick bites? I've felt the spots on both sides and don't feel any obvious weakness in the skin. What I do feel is nubs on the hairy side.

Here's a look at the skin and a closeup:

Are these tick bites? If not, what are they? Can I trust this skin?

I cannot really tell what this is, but it's not that unusual in skins. I've had parts of thorns in skins but in all cases it was safe to mount, and that's what your skin looks to me.

Could also be scar tissue, say, from a prick on a barbed wire fence or some such. I've mounted skins with minor blemishes such as this quite a few times and never had a problem. I'd give it a go. If it breaks, shrug your shoulders and start over. Such is life as a drum maker… :)
