eugene zahoui, aka 'jo', is a dancer of guere heritage, from the village of .... in the west of the ivory coast. he was born to a griot family. coming to abidjan he soon gained experience with the dance companies djolem, villa kadji, aklysso and semae, before founding his own company, amounia, in 2004.
amounia means 'to go forward' in his native guere language. the company includes dancers, djembe and dunun players, bala and kora players. he has been choreographing and teaching in france and cote d'ivoire since 2004.
