I recorded this clip in January 2008 at Sega Cisse's home village. Enjoy!

Sega Cisse invited a few of us to stay with him in his village. The celebration took place under the big village tree (which was truly enormous.) The music was very much in Sega Cisse's (and Sega Sidibe's) style--laid back traditional Malian groove. No wara-wara...

Cheers,

Michi.

Great stuff, thanks Michi! Where is Nefadie Koura?

It's amazing how persistent the kids are, trying to dance, in spite of the guy wielding the tree branch.

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure. I went there the first morning after arriving in Bamako late the night before, after a 58 hour trip, so I was pretty spaced out when we left. Someone drove us there in a van, so I wasn't too concerned about the direction... :)

I'm trying to find out more from Jeremy.

Yes :) It was a bit of game. It's the job of the kids to tease the guy with the branch, and it's the job of the guy with the branch to threaten the kids and make them squeal. I think both sides really enjoyed the exchange :)

Cheers,

Michi.

I can't find the place with Googlemaps, it's too small. (About 200-300 people live there.) It's about a 100km north-west of Bamako.

Cheers,

yes, it's in the eastern part of kayes. probably more like 150km from bamako. sega has a farm there that he works on when he's not drumming, even in his 70s.
