Traditional Mali: Drissa Kone

Postby erichi » Fri Aug 06, 2010 11:30 pm

Hey there fellas,

I spent some years in Mali, really got to like Drissa Kone's playing
style which I would describe as very traditional but edgy with no frills.
He is actually a phenomenal teacher as well, rare to find in Mali.

Thought I would do what I can to collect the best videos of him I
had found on the web and consolidate them into one post.
Drissa teaches a lot at the djembe hotel
when he is in Mali.

Wolosodon (Really Sweet!) + Short Bio on Drissa:
Part of it is in german, but there are short clips of a few more rhythms
afterwards.

Mendianni:

Sumalen:

Suku/Frabanka, Madan:

Suguninku, then N'Gri:
Sedou Balo, who plays frequently with Drissa, solos
on this one. He is from Wassulu.

Ini bara! Thanks, erichi, and welcome to the site.

I love Drissa's playing too. He's got so much feeling and expression... I like the way he plays with just a konkoni and an accompaniment, so he can express the rhythm with his phrasing. And playing on a medium-pitch drum, he gets such a rich palette of sounds. Does he have CDs available other than the stuff Rainer Pollack recorded?

Bops, Definitely check out Kurubamako.
Probably my favorite djembe cd ever.
Really traditional rootsy playing but tons of energy
always pushing the rhythms forward...
If you like Mali style playing this cd
is where its at for me.

Sounds great, any idea where I can pick it up? Amazon.com has it for like 50 bucks... (?)
