Tabaski celebrations chez Famoudou Konate

Postby archetypo » Tue Sep 27, 2011 6:56 pm

The following videos were all shot on the day of the Tabaski fete, December 2007. I had just spent the morning shooting video of my then-future husband Seydou and some other drummers going door to door, playing various rhythms until people gave us money to go away (we started at about 5:30 am). Around noon we made it over to Famoudou's place in Simbaya, and the celebration there was in full swing. By then, I only had my little Canon SD-1000, with limited memory left, or I would have shot much more of this, but I tried to get as many highlights as possible.

Lots of excellent playing, some great comedic highlights with the dancing (Fode Konate, and Famoudou, both joining in on the dancing)

Enjoy!

Do they do the same thing there as in Conakry? i.e. go out early in the morning to play music outside people's houses?

i experienced this in conakry 2005 for Tabaski...

but not in the village we were in...we are actually brought there by the matriarch of the village to provide the music for the Tabaski and Side/Mamaya fete the day after. there were no local drummers in the neighboring villages as far as i know. i think the closest would have been the Oulare family in Faranah proper.
