Susu rhythms

Postby bubudi » Sat Dec 12, 2009 5:53 am

here's fatouabou camara teaching two susu rhythms: yoki and mane.

fatouabou was a soloist in ballet djoliba, percussions de guinee, koteba (abidjan) and wofa before starting his own group, fatouabou percussions. he also performed and recorded with the late sax player, singer and arranger, momo wandel soumah. he is one of the specialists of susu rhythms and passes on his knowledge of guinean percussion to the younger generations.

this footage is from 2004, care of drlee.

some good instructionals for this style:

aly sylla - made in guinea susu djembe instructional dvd - includes bote drums. good content but not recommended for beginner or intermediate players due to the presentation making it difficult to learn the parts in the right place. dvd lacks cultural background on the rhythms. rhythms include sinte, yokui, kanya soli, sore, temoure, makru.

bangourake - traditional rhythms from guinea dvd (vol. 1 & 2) - includes many guinean rhythms, but bangourake is especially good on the susu rhythms, of which you will get yokui (gine fare), mane, sinte and makru. other rhythms include: liberte, tiriba, donso, silamalon, moribayasa, wassolon soli, foli, wanai, kono & kassa djibo. vol 3 also due out soon which will also have yokui and kanya soli from the susu repertoire.

I have this DVD... it's OK. I would give it 3 stars due to some technical glitches that make it very difficult to watch. The material is good, but for much of the DVD, the video and audio are completely out of sync. It's extremely annoying.

I agree. Musical content: 5 stars. Information content: 0 stars. Didactics: 0 stars. Definitely not for beginners.

Bops, could let us know on which tracks you are seeing this issue? I haven't noticed any out-of-sync sound with my copy.

Cheers,

I don't recall exactly. I believe it's during the "ensemble" sections, where he's actually demoing the solo phrases.

I just skimmed through the ensemble sections and, at least on a cursory look, can't find any out-of-sync sound. Maybe you have a bad copy?
