kalabanka is a cool wasulun piece that is traditionally played with no dunun.

this is a village piece from wasulun. you will not find info on it. it's one of the pieces that traditionally doesn't have any dunun accompaniment - normally just 2 djembes. i posted it here because i was hoping someone knew a bit more about it. rusty studied with sega, perhaps we'll hear from him...

Hi,

I've had the opportunity to study this rythm with Séga Sidibé.
The name of the rythm itself indicates it's from the Kalaban (Kalaba, Karaban?) region and not at all from Wasulun.
This rythm is also, according to Séga, called "Farabanka", but he considers it to be a mistake.

Séga told me many times that kalabanka is played by the same people who play Madan, and that this rythm is even their favourite one.
I may be wrong (because I never stayed in this area) but I think the Madan is traditionally played in the region located between Bamako and Sélingué.

The rythm is played with two dununs, one with a simple pattern; the other one much more complex as the dununfola plays a lot a variations to follow the dance.

hi jsb

welcome and thanks for the info!

i am familiar with farabanka (or farabakan) which is often played with suku. that is a completely different rhythm to kalabanka, so yes that would indeed be a mistake. also, faraba and kalaba are two different villages. faraba is in the sikasso region. i know there is more than one village called kalaba. do you know where this particular village is?

i was told this rhythm is traditionally played without dunun.
