Pyramid break from Mini-Guinea San Diego, April 2010

Postby michi » Fri Apr 30, 2010 6:03 am

Here is a sound clip of the break Mamady just taught us during the Mini-Guinea camp in San Diego.

Please see my blog entry for more background info on why this particular pyramid is special.

Michi, how long does it take for a group to get through one of those in terms of the learning process?

Will you play it up to speed? I assume that's a bit slower than "performance" speed, am I right?

Very cool and intricate. Do people volunteer for dun dun duty, or is that assigned?

- with a group of 25 people, it took 8 hours.
- Yes, Mamady was telling that the speed will have to be a balllet speed
- There are some dunun players who stay on the dunun's most of the time.
If you want to see me kick some butt, just tell me about all the things you think I won't be able to do

Listening back on that, I recognize and have played parts of that break for different shows before. Its interesting to hear them all together in one piece. Nice backstory on this in the blog as well.

Mamady generally brings his own dundun players. They are learning along with everyone else, but they are experienced. Mamady knows how important the dunduns are and, if you end up with someone who's shaky, the entire thing falls apart.

I'd say we spent 6.5 to 7 hours on the break. (Part of the first session was taken up by learning the intro and the rhythm, so we didn't spend all of the first session on the break.

As Adam said, actual speed will be quite a bit faster.

Cheers,

Michi.
