I am unable to understand the above sentence, what does that exactly mean ?

Is the soloist just teaching phrases, while not trying to be in the groove of the rhythym.

Michel wrote:I think with the sentence that the music is not counting is meant that there is a sort of competition between the soloist and the konkoniplayer. The soloist is maybe trying to impress the white accompagniment player (or just trying to place the phrase right in the rhythm?)

i'm sure Afoba will chime in but i'll take a guess...

he probably feels that he music is "not counting" given the situation: a private class for a tubab with a camera. change the context to an actual budiani fete, and you'll hear different playing.

come to think of it, haven't seen much real bundiani/mendiani fete footage coming out of Mali.
should i shave my moustache?

Michi, you expressed my thoughts better than I did, I think!

Michel, yeah, now we met! Of course both, Sidibé and Camara, are great djembé players, I would never argue about that! Have a nice time in Bamako d:-)

Nerd, I said, the music is not important (or not the most important thing) to the solo player at this very moment.

Greetings and a nice evening

I agree. And let's face it, we may be a bit too hard on the soloist. After all, that's a relaxed situation where no-one minds if a player screws up occasionally. Maybe Brulye was simply experimenting, trying out new stuff, realizing that something didn't work, and going on his merry way. I certainly do that occasionally: go off into the woods, get completely lost, shrug my shoulders, and do something more reasonable again. After all, we learn from our mistakes…

Cheers,

Michi.
