Mamady and Famoudou in San Diego 2011

Postby michi » Mon Jul 11, 2011 11:28 am

I shot this video at the end of the grand masters tour in San Diego, 1 July 2011. Mamady and Famoudou did this little demonstration at the end of the final teaching session on the Friday afternoon. This was the best workshop I've ever attended. It was the first time I got to meet Famoudou, which was a real privilege. And to be taught by the last two remaining grand masters of the djembe was a truly eye-opening experience. Mamady and Famoudou are planning to do this again next year. Don't miss this if it happens!

I was at the workshop at Mother Land Music in Inglewood, Ca. on Saturday. Mamady Keita said he wrote this Rhythm, and that his hope is that it becomes a traditional rhythm just like Kuku and Soli so that it will be played for centuries as those have been.
It is indeed called Bele Bele and is a welcoming. Also some words of the song translate to "Big Personality" which he definitely has!

Right.. I got it from Babara Bangoura.. Dont remember him saying it was a creation, but I suppose as one of MK's right hand men he would use a lot of his tunes... I had got the impression it was traditional, he said there were also specific rhythms to welcome some of the more well known clans???.. Hmm must pay more attention in class... Leufer and the kid were there so maybe they can shed light..

Its a rocking rhythm anyway..

well... good luck with that.

I've heard that kind of talk from Mamady before. From one of his interviews, don't remember wich one. Maybe this and other creations by Mamady will become traditional Workshop rhythms. I'm not seeing how his creations will become traditional if the circuit where he plays them and teaches them is the western one.

I also learned a rhythm that my instructor got from Babara called "deux djembés". It is supposedly a donsofoli, a rhythm for the hunters. But when I posted it here, no one had heard of it. I got to think that maybe it is a Babara creation. Wich doesn't diminishes its value. I loved the rhythm.

Maybe we could make a list of Mamady's creations/adaptations. I could start with:

Bele bele (creation? adaptation?)
Abondan (adaptation)
Lekule (adaptation)
Matoto (creation)

Am I wrong on these ones?

There's also:
Kuruni (creation--spelling?)
Kudani (creation--spelling?)
Sumalo (creation?)

and a lot of the rhythms on his CDs/DVDs...

Sumalo is a Mamady composition.

Add to that Balandugu Sila, Bara, Bonya, Denbaya, Kedju, Sira, Famoudou, Dubalen, Dai, Karinkan, Djigui, Sundiata Fasa, Sira, Billi Billi, Dai, Keiko, and Toubuka all of which are Mamady's compositions.

Cheers,

Michi.

it should be noted that most if not all of these rhythms have traditional songs from his village and surrounding region that are accompanied by clapping.

this is not any different than what Famoudou does or any of the other big djembefola from the village...
