the coulibaly brothers were a great band from bobo dioulasso, burkina faso. founded by bala/djembefola/tamafola/singer 'ye' lassina coulibaly and his twin brother, housseini (kamelengoni/percussion), this band of griots of bwaba descent (yes, unusual surname for a griot) featured some smashing percussive breaks, fast rhythm, burkinabe swing, balafon, kora and vocals. the group received high acclaim in europe and produced 2 albums: anka dia and seniwe. husseini passed away in 2002 and the group returned to bobo dioulasso. lassina started to focus on his solo career but the group continued to perform in africa. here's an anthology of some of their performances. other musicians in the band (all from the coulibaly family) were: solo (djembe/bala/composer/instrument maker/costume maker), ousmane (djembe/bara), djouma (vocals/dance), mariam (vocals, dance), kassoum (djembe/dunun/vocals), abdoulaye (djembe/bala) & kalifa (djembe/dunun/bala).

Lassina passed away too, this year, in june. RIP.

i didn't know of lassina's passing. there is nothing about it on his website or profiles.
