well, you could. Rainer Polak has lots of footage, either you try to get some from him. or you try to learn and record from Jaraba directly, though I don't know if he's still alive...

Unfortunately he passed away in 2005. He looked like a pretty serious drummer.

"Jaraba Jakite, born approx. in 1953, moved to Bamako in 1984. Since then his sensationally physical, dancing, drumming style has rapidly had gained him the reputation of a great »worker of the drum.« Jaraba, the »Great Lion«, used to be one of the most sought after celebration drummers of the city. After a successfull Germany tour with Madu Jakite and Rainer Polak in 2000, his state of health got increasingly worse until he passed away early in 2005".

very sorry to hear that. I think Rainer told us, but I wasn't sure. Looks like Rainer Polak is the source for the great Lion now. Besides the cd for the Jenbe Realbook there is the Bamako Foli cd that Rainer produced in 2004 and the cd that comes with his dissertation on jenbe playing in Bamako where you can hear Jaraba. Rainer is currently a new research professor in Cologne:

I forgot Rainers "Donkili. Call to dance" cd, where Jaraba performs on tack 1-7. All these cds are among the best on Malian traditional style..
