I think these are some cool videos. Robotics are really interesting, and it's always fun to see what people come up with. There is no danger, or any intention I can see of robots replacing humans when it comes to this music. The dundun robot is cool, and I would definitely want one for my home. The djembe and bongo robots need some kind of different arpeggiators or something because to me, they seemed pretty monotonous. But still, very cool from a robotics standpoint.

There's a great video of a guy who built a midi-bata set that he plays with mallets and his feet. When I read about it at first, I rolled my eyes, but it is actually really cool...

Oh, here it is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJSchB0lyhA (don't mean to hijack the thread with this)

i think the dunun robot sounds very mechanical and expressionless, but that's just me... (dunun player, can you tell? ;))

I primarily play duns and I think it's kinda cool. I'm not really sure I dig the mask and the dress-up but the robotic/technology aspect is interesting. Not sure I'd go out and buy one but I appreciate the time and effort it went into doing this (I do IT work in an R&D environment so I see stuff similiar to this)

While this is all very mechanical and primitive at this stage, I think that concepts like this have merit. There is a lot of creativity that can only be expressed with the help of computers. Exploring new concepts such as this may not lead to the ultimate djembe robot, but may well lead to insights that turn out to be useful elsewhere, such as helping disabled people, or coming up with new ways to control other instruments that more easily lend themselves to machine control.

I certainly admire the spirit of innovation, if not the musical quality of the result.

Cheers,

Michi.

Yuk, it's totally soulless! When I first started playing, I used djembe.net a lot - synthetic sounds, but again, you could programme in a rhythm enough to let you practice against - but it's NOTHING like a real player with real soul, and really hope this is offered totally tongue in cheek only.

it,s a very nice idea, of course it won't replace human playing but you know we need to practice so this is a good support, i practice with a looper, it demands a heavy sound installation too.
by the way 1 person can play the 3 dununs full patterns of soli fast together but it doesn't replace the separate playing, looper does a better job.
anyway nice job for the robot, it's a step forward...
