Cheers David. That is so sweet. Really want to learn more about jenbe in Ivory coast and learn more specifically about the Zaoli family of rhythyms. The n'gri is amazing on the youtube page too

Well Nate,

Is that Dr. Djo Bi playing jenbe ?

Do you think there is more emphisis on the third slap in Ivory Coast. Did it originate there?

Could you mention a few more folas from ivory coast please?

Cheers

He sounds and looks like Djo Bi to me although the video is a little old. I can't comment on the "origin" of the slap technique with which you are referring. While the technique probably co-evolved in different regions, I think Djo Bi uses it more consistently than most jenbefolas I have met. He also uses some other techniques that I have not seen anyone else incorporate into their style. I have been told that Djo Bi, and I am sure some others in Ivory Coast, have been the source for many other well known jenbefolas when it comes to learning the Zaoli rhythms. I would definitely say that Djo Bi has been a strong inspiration for this style of jenbe playing.

hey kid

don't know if you checked the post on the signature slap thread.
I asked Baba Toure if the tonpalo slap was from, or, original, or typical to Ivory Coast, and he said yes. That was not the first time I had heard that (and that's why I asked him, to get a confirmation).

From the djembefolas I know of, the one that handles best this slap IMO is Thomas Guei. Mamady (don't know if he would have got it from the years in Ballet Koteba, in Ivory Coast, or earlier). And Fode Seydou Bangoura uses it a lot too. There's a lot of good videos in the signature slap thread.

From Ivory Coast: Thomas Guei, Baba Toure, Petit Adama Diarra, Ladji Kante (there's a thread about this)
