Cool body percussion

Postby michi » Sat Dec 24, 2011 11:08 pm

While writing this post, I looked around on YouTube for some inspiration. Found these two cool pieces.

Students at the University for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna:

Funk-style body percussion:

There is lots more if you search around a bit. Fun to watch!

Cheers,

I'd hoped not seeing you on the board for the past day meant your passport appeared through a bit of Christmas magic, but it appears that isn't the case. Bummer.

Michi,

There's also a dance style called stepping that makes elaborate use of body percussion, creating complex rhythms and very cool relationships. I remember being exposed to this in high school when a friend performed at one of our school pep-rallies. It was wild and great fun.

Best,

No passport. I called Australia Post. It is true that the passport left Germany on 13 December. It's also true that it has not arrived in Australia yet. Most likely, it's sitting in some warehouse in Singapore waiting for someone to condescend to send it to Australia.

International registered post currently takes 18-19 business days to get from Europe to Australia. That's a month. I'll probably get the passport second week of January.

It's over :-(

Stepping - and step shows - are a big, big thing at historically black colleges in the US. (Mostly via fraternities and sororities.) There's also a more informal version of the step shows - stomp shows.

If you do a bit of Googling, you'll find lots of info. and videos. And ikwym about being blown away by stepping! The 1st time I ever saw a step show was in the mid-80s, and it was pretty mindblowing.
