Highly recommend the deer antler. It works extremely well for lifting off verticals, poking open recalcitrant knots, etc. The nice thing is that it will not damage the shell. No marks, no scratches.

My best accessory is a big flat head screw driver. It lifts the verts so I can get the rope under when I am tuning, and it is beefy enough so that I can just wrap the tuning rope around it to pull... no clam cleat necessary.

I sometimes use a big screwdriver too. The problem is that, with shells that have been varnished or lacquered, it tends to leave marks. The deer antler doesn't have that problem.

Cheers,

Michi.

As a budget alternative, I recommend one of these:

The big advantage is that, when you are not playing, you can use it as your BBQ ;)

One of these could come in handy for pulling knots, possibly rope (using a twist knot)
Round the pointy end.

I use a piece of broom handle 6 inch long for pulling knots. Costs nothing as there's always a bit of broken broom handle lying around.

Not sure whether that belongs into the "useless" or "useful" category. But, for pulling diamonds, a hand-held cleat is probably more useful:
