New Djembe Case: the Modoo

Postby Dugafola » Thu Jun 11, 2009 4:59 pm

i think this was discussed somewhere on the forum, but i decided it merits it's own thread.

He's trying to create the ultimate djembe case by addressing the shortcomings of some of the bags already on the market with the old Lagrutta case in mind as well.

Features include:
Beefy zippers
2 storage pockets for sticks, straps, tape, sese, beer etc...
Rain flap over top zipper
Hard top and bottom
Vinyl bottom - extra tough
Metal hardware connections for straps - no more busted plastic
Hide-away backpack straps for airplane travel
Carry handle on the side - reinforced with stitched on webbing around the girth of case

i think the case material and padding will be similar to DSD case with added tweaks listed above. i have my money down on one and should get it in a week or 2. i'll be able to post more pictures and first impressions then.

Who's making those and how much are they charging? That looks like it would take quite a bit of time to put together. Hope it's holding up well.

Anything you want to pass on so far? I'm curious how it compares with Drumskull's deluxe djembe case (which I think is excellent).

Cheers,

Michi.

the bag is holding up well. i haven't been using it as much as anticipated because it doesn't fit my new Mali drum. the bell is too large and won't fit in the bottom of the case.

the things i like:
thicker padding than any of the DSD bags
"feet" on the bottom - the bag will really stand up w/o a drum in it
flap over the zipper to keep rain and moisture out
beefy zippers for the pockets
metal hardware

things i don't like:
it doesnt' fit my big mali drum!
the metal hardware that's attached on the bag itself that's used to connect the shoulder straps to bag is a metal ring with a semi-circle shape. these things do not stay in place. if it were up to me, i'd make them rings to eliminate any extra pressure points on the bag when it's under load. also, i can see them breaking at some point in which i'll replace them with carabiners.
the carry handles weren't sewn together - not a big deal, but they were supposed to be sewn

so far, it's been a great case and this will most likely be the only run of them made.

Shame about that :-(

That's the biggest problem I find with pre-made drum bags: it's difficult to find something that makes for a snug fit. Quite often, the drum either doesn't fit at all, or fits with too much room around the perimeter or height, so it ends up rattling around in the bag, which I hate: it makes it harder to carry the whole thing because the drum swings around more.

Unless you happen to have a drum that just fits, you need a custom size, which is expensive (if it's available at all for a particular bag).

so far, it's been a great case and this will most likely be the only run of them made.

That's sad. It looks like a really nice bag. I guess it's very difficult to manufacture in the US and keep competitive prices, when you have to compete with the low labour costs in Asia...

Cheers,

Michi.

even so, the other DSD cases are also made in the US.

with a few tweaks, the Modoo could be the case to end all case discussion.

as it stands right now, i think it's better than a DSD deluxe. reasons being:
thicker padding, flap over zipper, extra pocket, metal hardware, "feet" on bag.

Maybe the guys from Drumskull are listening? ;)

Some minor changes to the existing Deluxe case would do the trick, it seems.

Michi.

Wish I could to get my hands on one and see about sewing my own custom case. I might just go with a simple closure system; perhaps an attached, padded-flap that goes directly on the head, with a drawstring closure over the top. You would just drop the drum in, flip down the solid top cover and then drawstring the top together over that. It could use a decent clamp on the drawstring.

Or you could make some sort of solid base, like a shallow cup and put the drum in the bag inverted. That way would leave a baggy top, but it might be more stable and protective.

Heck, at this point anything beats lugging the thing around naked....it's just asking for a blown head. Any ideas or suggestions for those of you that have used them for awhile would be great.

check out the pics earlier in this topic. a lot of research went into this bag. you could buy one from dsd or one of their cheaper models which are also pretty sweet.

i'm sure lots of people could give you advice for making a djembe bag, bat that deserves a new topic, don't you think?

I get a series of bags from H&B called drum seeker... They're nice. I've got a large Mali djembe with a big bell and it fits in the 14" bag. Their sizing is wack... but the bags are nice. Pockets, straps, handles, thick padding and some soft fake-sheep fur on the inside. VERY reasonably priced for the quality.

Will those Humes and Berg bags fit a Wula with a rubber bottom?

Measure the foot and tell me what it is. My Mali djembe has a bell of 10.75" diameter, and it fits in the 14" bag.
