Nice case - though I wonder if either of my djembes would fit in that thing. It seems to be designed around the proporotions and measurements of Remo "djembes"...

Here's some specs off the Memphis Drum Shop site with their 20% discount. Looks like it will handle most djembes, but the West African ones won't be happy being carried upside down.

the dimensions of this case are unsuitable for most djembes. you want a snug fit with a djembe case, otherwise your drum/drumhead knocks around in the inside of the case. that's even more of an issue with a hard plastic/metal case like that. most djembes are about 23-25" tall and 13-15" outer head diameter, so they should make another case which is 2" smaller either way. i wouldn't store any of my djembes upside down, but that could be a good option for flights, when you want to make sure the drum is stable and can handle the rough treatment that it gets from the baggage handlers. you should always detune the head before a flight anyway, so the temporary upside down storage is not an issue. i think a flight case should be different to a regular djembe case for a genuine african djembe. for the remos it looks like a good all-round case since the synthetic heads and the quick key tuning means upside-down storage isn't an issue.

I think the idea is a good one (for the case), but not the execution.

As far as putting drums upside down (with the head facing the floor), that's actually pretty common with darbukas and some other kinds of drums from the Middle East and Asia, mainly to protect the heads. I can't imagine that it would be harmful to a djembe as long at the head was well-padded (with foam + a layer of chipboard). Upside-down does make more sense for a flight case, if only because of the shape of the drum - upside-down is inherently more stable than right-side up.

That case looks great, especially for flying. A soft case just doesn't cut it for air travel.

I don't see any problem with storing a jembe on its head, provided that there is sufficient padding. It looks like I would want to add a thick layer of foam padding in this case, also around the inside of the case, to prevent movement like bubudi said. Also, it looks pretty heavy. But all in all, not bad! it's about time someone made a hard case for jembes. I'm saving my pennies.

My point above re: the drum not being happy about upside down storing/carrying referred to the Tree Spirits in the drum. Typically 2-3 of them but I've seen as many as 5, and they affect the performance of the djembe - best they feel good about everything.

Alternatively, there is a good choice at hardcase.com with a paste below for their cases that store the drum upright. It appears they have no U.S. distribution yet but I've emailed them on that development and other details on the cases.

From the hardcase.com page for Ethnic Percussion: the sizes are in 2" increments.

* Cases available for 10" to 18" diameter Djembes plus 10" to 16" diameter Doumbeks.
* Full foam protection for the drum-head and base.
* Complete with towing handle and wheels on all cases except the HC prefix cases.

In checking the first dealer listed the price for the 16' Djembe Hardcase is $112.60 plus likely considerable freight to ship to the U.S. Other dealers listed may have a better deal.

Worth a look.

Are you speaking about a soft wood djembe? They have only 1 Tree Spirit. Hardwood ones have 2-3;
Mali, Ivory Coast and Senegal hardwood djembes typically have 2, and ones from Guinea have 3 (very infrequently do they have more). I don't know the reason for variance at this point. The greater the number, up to 3, the deeper the sound.

Regardless of the number they do act as one, so you're correct in a summary way. I was speaking to the detail level.

So, trees in Guinea have more spirits than trees in other countries? Just out of curiosity, where did you hear that?

I didn't hear this anywhere; the evidence is what's in the drum, and I can see that way. Currently I don't know why Guinea drums typically have more. I sense the transition to 2 from 3 Tree Spirits does not happen until about 10 miles in from the border, into Mali from Guinea for instance. I don't know all the developmental factors involved in this, and the borders were arbitrarily established at some earlier point. The predominant factor (approx. 75%) tho is the will of Spirit, and they have their reasons.
