Very Simple Pulling Rig

Postby ruff » Sat Jan 21, 2012 7:42 pm

I just finished up a quick pulling session with this very simple rig. Everything is clamped to the saw horses. Very easy to rig up and MUCH easier then pulling by hand.

Thanks for posting your "very simple pulling rig"... very nice. I want to make a stand and have been wondering how to give the pulling arm spring action. I like your solution. Are you using a clam cleat to pull the rope?

Cool! Looks a lot like Bolokada's contraption, except with a sawhorse rather than a table.

Simpler is better! :-)

Thanks Michi.

Teb, Yes I am using a Clamcleat. It's mounted to a piece of metal and under the cleat I placed a small wedge of wood to angle the cleat a little. That lets the metal bar hang straight down.

This was so easy to put together it's worth it to do for only a single drum. No more lost skin off my knuckles.

Looks nice :) I use something very similar. I used clam cleats for a while, then graduated to cam cleats.. more expensive but grabbed the rope better. I've given up on all those and now use a little piece of metal that I welded up and tie a simple knot... no more frayed rope, works with 1mm to probably about 8mm... wont have to be replace.

Check it out here...

I've sense added some 1/8" rubber mat to the top and had to wrap the foam around those support pipes with some duct tape to keep them on. The design rocks in my little shop as I can fold it into the wall.

You're ashiko looks really nice. You going to get us a sound sample when its tuned up?? :dance2:

Ruff thanks for a response about using a clam cleat.

Rhythm House I clicked your link to see your pulling stand. Wow!... so cool! Simple/elegant/space saving I really like it. I am so happy to find your blog.

It's inspiring seeing what you guys have done. Now I need to design and build my own.

I can see how that works for the initial pull. A simple hitch around the crosspiece, and you can pull all you like.

My question is, what do you do for a second and third round of pulling? Once the verticals are tight, you can't wrap them around the crosspiece anymore (at least not the initial few verticals, until you get enough slack. How do you deal with that? Or do you use the same trick as for the pullers with an attached cleat and work the slack back and forth?

Cheers,

Michi.

I put a temporary knot where my verts start on the bottom ring and leave a good bit of loose rope past the knot. Each time around I release the temp knot and give myself enough slack, then retie the temp knot. On my last pull (I usually do three, one wet, one dry and one final) I tie a more secure knot, cut off the excess and burn the ends. If I happen to need to go around again, I just cut the rope above the knot and thread it through to the next loop on the bottom ring, and that gives me enough slack to start fresh...

Does this make sense?

When I used the cleats I also tied a loop where the verts started, and my final vert would go up to the loop then back down through the ring knot.. It worked good, and gave me extra pull if I needed it on that last vert, but doing the knot on the bottom ring looks little better...
