isn't it? I didn't pick the skins for that, they were a surprise... (from one of my fave drum builders, Chuck Greb of Bote Fote Drumworks - http://www.botefote.com/index.htm )

my guess is that your latest will likely look similar to my Mali djembe when you're finished with it...

The 1st one is especially nice! And i bet the 3d drum looks good in daylight - that would show some of the details better, I think.

Thanks,

The 1st and 3rd have awesome tones and have a wet sound, but the 2nd is the loudest and dry.

Yes, the 3rd looks good in daylight and with the wood color. Its a thick goat and I sanded it to take out the outer pigment which was dark grey.

Not only pretty (well, I think so, at least ;) ) but also different: it's a horse skin.

Different. Not like goat, and not like cow. Somewhere in between, closer to a thick goat skin than a thin cow skin. There is a little ring there right now too. I haven't played the skin in yet, and I don't think it's at its final pitch yet. I'll post a sample in a few days when I think I have dialled it in.

Cheers,

Michi.

Sidy had a drum that had some kind of forest animal like a deer or antelope. It was thicker than a goatskin... sounded just lovely. I am curious what a horse sounds like. Was it an Aussie horse or African?

Antelope is used for Ghanaian treshies (kpanlogo drums). Yes, it's a bit thicker than goat, but not much. Maybe like a very thick goat skin.

I've heard horse before, on djembes made by Jeremy Tomasck. He used thin horse skin, from the sides/belly. Sound was very similar to goat, but a little warmer. (They still had cracking slaps though.) According to Jeremy and Mamady, horse is a good hide to use because it sounds similar to goat but lasts longer.

The skin I fitted is on the thick side (compared to goat). I'd say the piece I had is like very thick goat skin. It came from an Aussie horse. (It's illegal to import rawhide into Australia unless it's been irradiated or chemically treated to within an inch of its life...)

Cheers,

Michi.

My last head, just had to replace it about a week ago. It was gorgeous and had a good sound until the very end.
