Anyone have experience with doing cradle knots with 4 ropes running vertically and 2 horizationally ala Bolokada on his Mbara DVD?

I've seen Bolo do this on his drums. It's basically the same technique as the knot Michi posted above, but it goes all the way around. Pretty straightforward, actually - you basically just double-up the rope on your cradle knots.

Here's a snap-shot of his djembe.

Thanks!

Thanks Bob for the screenshot. I edited my post above after re-reading the question. I'll try and post some pics on how to do this sometime soon.

In my opinion, an evening with a tub of 100% shea butter and a hair dryer is a fine way to seal the drum and give it a nice finish. Plus your hands will be soft for a week!

Apply some shea butter to small portions of the shell at a time and use the hair dryer to melt it into the pores. Don't put too much, nobody likes a totally greasy drum - you'll know when you've done enough because the shea butter will absorb alot slower.
