Fabric for rings

Postby Dub Town » Sun Nov 20, 2011 4:10 pm

I'm having a hard time finding bright, African inspired designed fabric to wrap my rings, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Historically Ive used black hockey tape (for hockey sticks), it works great (same feel as cloth, but self adhesive), but now I'm finding that the black is fading pretty quick.

I use ribbon from a fabric store over top of a wrap of electrical tape (to stop moisture from getting to the rings and rusting them).

I use bias tape for seam binding. It is in the notions department of fabric stores. Despite it's name, it isn't actually tape, but a fabric strip that is used to finish seams in clothes. It is generally comes pre-folded, so I unfold it and iron it open. It works really well because it is pre-cut to about an inch wide and is cut on the bias, which means it is easy to wrap around something round. It comes in lots of colors, too, including classic red!

I use the normal fabric ribbon tapes, all kind of choices and I can even match the rope to the ring cloth.

My wife has bought some stuff from these guys when our Ghana fabrics ran out..... http://www.aknfabrics.com. Although, once you wrap it, you lose most of the design, so any psychedelic odds and ends from your local fabric store works. I even went to the recycling place and looked through their free clothes bin, found some old pyjamas and business shirts that looked pretty good once I wrapped them around.

Be imaginative, worst case scenario, find some old sheets at the Salvos and tye dye them!!!!

All of the previous suggestions are good.

I just go to the local thrift shop and find a fabric (T-shirts work well) of the color that suits me. Once the fabric is wrapped, the design will not be recognizable unless its extremely small and detailed, so the design is not really critical.
