Drum Head Cleanup

Postby cobra » Wed Dec 14, 2011 8:28 pm

Hey Folks,

I've come across a neglected and abused drum (images attached) in need of help.

Recently, somebody left beer bottle rings on the head. Any idea how to clean it up?

Thanks for any help you can offer,
cobra

Try giving it a light sand with 120-grit sandpaper.

Failing that, a new skin should do the trick :-)

Hey Cobra,

I think Michi's second suggestion is a great one, LOL.

Just tune the drum to sound how you like it and know that the skin is probably going to need replacing fairly soon. There is a lot of information on how to do that yourself, if you are game. You can also start checking around now for someone in your area who can put on a new skin for you.

Really? So there's not much that can be done to clean up a drum head? My brother has a nice djembe that my grand daughter took a crayon to. Is he stuck with her doodles until he changes the skin?

Your brother should appreciate the art work! :)

You can try methylated spirits or dry cleaning fluid. Try a small patch first to see how it goes.

Don't use water.

Cheers,

Michi.

I clean my drum with a ball of skrunched up news paper and a bit of spit. It works wonders. the news paper absorbs the saliva and cleans the dirt. You could try meths like michi said with the news paper doin the scrubing. Vinegar and news paper might would work too
