It's really difficult to tell from a photo.

Most djembes made in Ghana are made of Tweneboa, a very pale and soft wood, rather poorly suited to making djembes. The drum in the pictures you posted doesn't look like it's made of Tweneboa. But, I'm wondering whether that drum was stained. Something about the coloration doesn't ring quite true with me.

What's the weight of that drum? That will tell you something about the kind of wood it might be made out of.

Michi.

Hmm, there was a post some time ago from a maker in Ghana which some what dispelled the idea that you only get white would djembes in Ghana.. Far as I remember he was in the North of ghana. This looks like some of my drums from Burkina. Sorry terrible with names and they might be called something else in Ghana anyway.

What is the point in asking a question to which you already know the answer?

The drums look nicely headed.. I'd like to see the inside of these drums.

Why did you ask the question when you knew the answer? As we all know, it's often very difficult to determine a wood species by a photo alone. Seems like maybe you asked just to point the finger at those who were wrong?

Either way, I think the drums look nice. How do they sound?

Fair play to Aideau, this debate came up before and everybody was sceptical about him saying that there is red tweanbou wood. Now he has proved himself right. He is a drum maker in ghana and is doing a good job by the looks of it.

Who's really trollin this tread duga and djembeweaver thanks for giving us some of your philosiphical brilliance

Well as your rightly said, I asked the question to prove a point, and that is the reason why I even included 2 different kind wood.

For the sound I wish you can try them so that it will answer your question because I can telling the sound is good whiles is not and I can’t also tell you the sound is bad, then what will be the point. I hope you understand me

I merely asked a question. Is there something you'd like to get off your chest Kid?

I think this has the makings of a great thread - if we can all stay calm, and aiduenu is willing to share his first-hand experience as a Ghanian drum maker.

Please tell us, aiduenu, are the types of wood you mention common in Ghana? How do they compare to better-known woods such as lenke, melina and bala? Does tweanbou come in red AND pale (as Michi states). If so, what is the difference?

Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

By the way, if your drums sound as good as they look, you are a fine drum maker.

My sarcasm speaks for itself ... :p

I'd like to know how rare are these woods in Ghana. Is the reason so many drum makers use the white wood because it is easier to carve?

And i'd like to see the inside of these bowls to check the craftsmanship
