So, it was just a little over 4 years ago that I picked up a crap-ass toca djembe at the guitar center and then googled 'African drum teacher in RI' and found my way to Sidy Maiga's class. I don't think it is overstating things to say that the day I walked into his class for the first time was a defining moment in my life. I feel so very lucky when I think of all the amazing experiences I have had because of the drum. I went to Africa. I am going back in January. I can rebuild a drum. I know 11 songs and over 50 different solo parts for them. I own 2 gorgeous djembes and a great Jeli dun dun. And I now have people in Mali that feel like long lost relations.
In the midst of the joy, there has been sorrow, too. In the last year and a half, I have lost two of my Malian friends. For me, Mali will forever be slightly bittersweet. Makes me want to get back and see my friends all the more.
This odyssey has been big for my family, too. My children have learned about a whole new culture. My oldest son is studying French in school so he can come to Bamako with me someday. My husband, too, has grown fond of my Malian family. He, too, is a refugee from another culture, and I think feels a sense of camaraderie.
And you, my fellow djembefolas! I love that we gather, from all corners of the globe, to share our love of the drums.
4 years down..... dozens to go.
Love,
Rachel
