Interesting idea, but what about "observers" who would like to ask questions for clarification? I can imagine that the "study group" is mostly 5 - 10 of the regular posters who have studied a little longer than the rest, however there are a lot of serious posters (and students) here with less background who would come up with good questions (especially for clarifying posts which depend on special knowledge that might be clear to those "in the know" but not for people who havn't come across that specific information)

{damn it, Carl... BACK TO WORK!}

Agree'd, Though, with this group on this kind of project, I suspect we will be able to self mod pretty well.

A thought about digressions, how hard would it be to have a separate category for the study group? That way there can be one thread for the central conversation, yet still be able to have side discussions kept in the same area?

true, but there is usually a djembe call there which answers the sangban. not sure if that's pre or post ballet.

there will be people who don't have enough knowledge to contribute much but they can ask questions which can help the discussion along. that is their contribution. so in principle i think anyone should be able to read and post.

however, i'm personally not keen on lurkers who never post anything or don't even bother to sign up. this is a community. in order for information to be shared there must be respect. so i'm suggesting it be a members only area with a minimum post count (would 10 posts be fair?).

I think having that in a "members only" section is a good idea, and hope that it encourages more people to participate. :)

yea ok. my understanding of that phrase or blockage is that it can start before the time or on the time, but should cut on the off beat...almost exclusively.

the blockage can be heard in all of the old old ballet stuff i have.

i can ask later this week.

Do we maybe need a cutoff for the *number* of rhythms nominated? (Like 5, maybe?)

Because the current list is getting long.

Am also thinking that an uneven number for us to vote on is better, in case of the need for a tie-breaker of some kind...

polls automatically have a maximum of 10 options so it couldn't be more than that anyway.
is 10 options too many? personally i think 5 is easier to choose from but in the end it boils down to number of votes. when we vote for the national/state elections there are way more than 10 parties... i don't know if it makes any difference if there is an odd or even number of options. there has to be a clear majority, that's all. if there is a tie then the mods will deal with it, but actually i don't envisage that happening very often, if at all. if it does then we can adjust as necessary... meanwhile i think it better not to restrict the choices to the 5 quickest people to nominate. it's fairer to give everyone a decent chance to nominate a rhythm.

All very good points, b. I'm just thinking aloud about this (or I was, a bit earlier), since Ive never been involved in this kind of process before. Besides, over here, we're not nearly as accustomed to dealing with multiple voting options as you are. (Really - we have more than 2 parties, but for all intents and purposes, the 2 major parties are the only ones that count.)

If there's more than 10 nominated I'll whittle that back to 10 randomly an then we'll vote :)

update on this exciting project:

  • voting for rhythm for december now in progress - you have 48 hours from time of this post.
  • we will study one rhythm per month as per majority vote. this will be extended to two months if there is a high enough demand to keep studying a rhythm in more depth.
  • new subforum in the music section called 'rhythm of the month' will contain all topics relating to this project. ability to see attachments and post messages in this subforum will be limited to members who have introduced themselves in the 'introductions' subforum and posted at least 10 messages of a non-commercial nature. if you haven't done this already, now is your chance! introduce yourself, participate in discussions, or post some good jokes! it is your responsibility to make sure any posts you make meet the criteria outlined in the rules and guidelines.
  • to keep full access to this subforum you will need to stay active - that is, keep participating in the community by posting new topics or replying to existing topics from time to time.
  • towards the end of each month we will open a new topic for the following month's rhythm to study. members will have a couple of days to nominate rhythms, then a 48 hour poll will be added within the same topic to allow voting for one of the nominated rhythms.
  • once a rhythm is nominated there will be several days to identify and gather the learning material before commencing study on the first of the month.
  • study/discussion of a particular rhythm will happen within the same topic in which it was nominated/voted.

Ok, the Study Group Forum is now hidden to anyone who isn't a member.

I can't restrict access to people with more than 10 posts unless I upgrade the whole system. I only did that less than a month ago and I'm mad busy at the moment, so lets roll with what we have for now.

Plans are to re-address the rewarding of contributers and limiting silent views are underway and there will likely be bigger changes in place for next month :)
