No the dun duns are very very heavy hardwood. I know, I will repace the other skins on my congas, I have another set of four fibreglass LP galaxys at home all with horse head on them and they sound beautiful!!!! I've had those heads on them for ten years and they still sound great after numerous tours!! these palladium congas are still new and I only had time to put one thick!! cow skin on my quinto, so I'm gonna have to find some time to do the rest, it's hard cause I'm playing them everyday. beleive me, I've never been into Lp conga skins, always horse or thick cow!!!!

Really? Looking at this section of your image, I would have sworn that's a painted oil drum.

Good to hear! :) I've never been keen on the LP skin sound. BTW, do you happen to know what they do to their skins to give them that translucent beige color and the shiny surface? They look and feel almost as if they were made of plastic. There must be a fair bit of chemistry involved...

Cheers,

no but I hate it whatever it is, I remember in the 90s they used to have some nicer conga heads, but then they started getting more translucent and thinner and more plastic sounding, the ones on my palladium are still pretty thick though which is a good thing. I wish they would make nice heads,It must be because they selling so many and it's cheaper and easier to make factory heads.
btw I love what you've done to your djembe and the roping and the metal work, it looks great!!!!
also I love the hardwood decking, is that maribeua? my mother in law lives in Noosa,I've spent a lot of time up there,I recognise the sub tropical fauna!!!

The decking is Spotted Gum. The fauna is from Brisbane. Not quite as tropical as Noosa, but close :)

Nice drum Grasshopper. Nate does a fantastic job. I've watched him head drums before and he takes great care in it. He definitely knows what he's doing, and that is a kick ass shell.

Very nice, Pariah. Looks great.

Grasshopper, wow, 34 lbs! You are going to need a crane to get that thing strapped on. (Maybe I should repost that in the 'things djembe players shouldn't say in public' thread, LOL.) It is a beauty.

Not my axe, but Mamady's ;) That's the drum Mamady played last Saturday. I'm told that this is the No. 1 djembe, which comes out only on rare occasions...

Cheers,

Michi.

I wonder if Mamady's drum has a lowjack system installed as well...

If someone stole that drum, the only place they could ever play it would be in complete privacy--not a lot of fun.

And besides, playing a stolen drum would be seriously bad juju... Mamady told a story in San Diego about the "circle of djembefolas" and the bad things that can happen if you are not initiated by your master as how to survive in that company. For example, according to Mamady, touching another djembefola's drum without permission can make your arm swell up to double its normal thickness...

Cheers,

Michi.

Here's the first of my recently acquired axes. This one's still in the post but should be arriving any day now :D

It's Khadi/Gueni a.k.a Balafone wood with a nice calf skin on it. When I was in Burkina some friends sent me money to buy them drums so I had to luck to be able to go to a carver and buy 8 shells, get them all skinned and then pick the nicest one for myself. This one stood out as the cream of the crop. It's got a really mad screaming sound, like good overtones, that just sings above the others.
