I ordered the naked shell because quarantine regulations make it impossible to bring in a shell with the skin on, so I did the rope work and fitted the skin. Sound so far is promising. The skin isn't anywhere near full tension yet. I'm planning to bring it up gradually over the next few days, so it has time to settle in. I'm hoping it'll sound as good as looks...

Cheers,

Michi.

My latest axe. Just finished it this morning

Here it is once more, after adding decoration. Sound has come good--no more ringing. I like it a lot!

Here is a shot of what it looks like after the wet pull, with the temporary verticals stretching the skin over the rim.

And here is what it looks like after adding the wrap.

Hi Michi

Many thanks for the pics and explanation on this as I am about to do one for a young lady in our group.

May I just ask how you get the creases out from the skin when pulling the skin through the rings and then over the verts please ? I always endup with creases !

Before you tie down the skin flap, go around the perimeter of the drum, grab the skin flap with both hands, and pull up, out, and sideways, stretching the skin away from the drum. You need to do this hard. Work your way around the entire drum, pulling around each knot.

Then, when you fold the flap over and tie it down, make sure that you pull down hard when you tighten the second set of verticals, so you get a good amount of tension on the skin flap. If you see any creases, you can usually get rid of them by adjusting where the skin folds go around the temporary horizontal loop. Any minor folds you can usually get rid of when you wrap the skin flap to press it against the sides. Again, that wrap needs to be tight, so pull hard when you do this.

Cheers,

Michi.

Thanks Michi,

I just got the skin through for this drum and am a bit worried about is thickness. Its rather thin and I hope the edge holes will take the second vert pulling.

fingers crossed.

If the skin is large enough, make the circle 4cm larger in diameter and cut the slits further away from the edge. That minimizes the risk of tearing through the wet skin when you stretch down the skin flap. Use judgement: you don't need to pull like a madman. Just enough to fit the skin nicely over the crown ring and stretch it tight enough to get he folds out.

Cheers,

Michi.

 8) ... Looks like fun! What are the drums on the left, under the chimes? They almost look like dununs with modern hardware.
