Respect

Postby ubba » Mon Jul 05, 2010 3:07 am

Long ago I heard some music, I don't recall where or when, I was very young and it made an impression on me, years went by and I have not heard this again until recently. I was on you tube and I came across a 70 year old master Sega Cisse, that was the feeling I had heard and tried to find in drumming for so long. While watching the video I realized it contained so much more than a rhythm, so much more than a particular named piece such as "Kuku" it was the village, it was family, it was respect for those that had mastered something and became seasoned with life. I saw how they gave this man respect, I saw how he felt his music and participated in the group and they with him. There was a point in the video when a woman lovingly took off her head scarf and wiped Sega Cisse's face with it, dried the sweat that had begun to accumulate. I saw how the group became one big family and all participated, each person was free to join in and dance or play the music but the feeling in this video is one of the most powerful I have seen. Not only is the music exactly what I like, just what I've been looking for but it taught me about unity in some small way and "respect".

Sega Cisse, you ROCK, your music ROCKS, your family ROCKS. No disrespect to Mamady, I could listen to him all day, I could listen to any person with a drum at least half the day if he has a smile on his face and loves what he is doing but this rhythm touches my soul!

I had the privilege of studying with Sega for a whole month, 2-2.5 hours per day, six days a week. The man is beautiful. I felt a bit like a child again, sitting on my dad's lap. He'd hold me, protect me, teach me, mentor me, scold me, and joke with me. I love him.

Yo Ubba,

You took words out of my mouth. I envy people who met him and studied with him. But there's more of these types walking around. Look for old masters. they really have the tradition and the right feeling, and some of them don't even know ballet-style...

By the way, talking about respect: Bubudi's next post will be number 2000!!!! Congratulations.

That scene mentions "ten thou" rather than "two thou", but I still thought it apt :-)

Cheers,

Michi.
