We had a massive poplar tree fall in half last year on the estate during an open day due to a woodpecker nest - how it never hit anyone was incredibly lucky. The nest was still at the top of the remaining part of the tree and the woodpecker was still feeding the chicks even though the roof had fallen off. I took a fair few photos of it all.
When the woodsman came to chop it all up for fire wood i got him to cut the bottom ten feet of the stump into two five foot lengths which are now seasoning. I'm gonna try and make a couple of ngoma style drums with them next year.
I agree, it is nice to have a good story behind a drum or two.
Not sure if the wood will be any good for drums, but i get the skins off the highland cattle on the estate so it's not costing me anything to have a go.
