Mamady Keita and Famoudou Konate tour

Postby gmckayle » Wed Jun 01, 2011 10:03 pm

I'm wondering if anyone has been to any of the world tour classes and if you know the policy on recording. Also, do you know if the book "Mamady Keita the Life of the Djembe" is sold on tour?

world tour? that's news to me. according to both famoudou's and mamady's websites it's only a usa tour. so far they have been in boston and atlanta, have a couple of days left in dallas and are due in san diego on the 19th june. i suspect san diego will have the most df members in attendance.

i honestly don't know about the book, but it's available through a few stores online (do an online search). you could also try contacting ttm usa directly.

I stand corrected -- USA tour.

They added a stop in Phoenix for those who don't know -- they will be at The Musical Instrument Museum June 10, 11, 12. June 10 is a screening of the film "Djembefola" and June 11 and 12 they are teaching beginning and intermediate drumming classes.

Audio recording shouldn't be a problem. I recorded at Mamady's min-Guinea.

Mamady is perfectly happy for people to record (audio only). I've also heard that Famoudou probably won't allow recording.

Cheers,

Michi.

No audio recording would be a deal breaker for me. I don't care who the teacher is.

Pencil and paper, mate :) Or take your mobile phone or recorder and vocalize the patterns during a break.

But I agree. The ban on recording is silly. On the one hand, many masters complain that students do not accurately pass on rhythms and, on the other, they do their level best to ensure that the rhythms won't be passed on accurately...

To me, a ban on recording is annoying, but not a show-stopper.

Cheers,

Michi.

just a suggestion... email ttm and famoudou well before hand and ask for permission to record as a personal learning aid. possibly famoudou will give you limited permission with conditions, especially if mamady is fine with it. no harm in trying.

I'm surprised they're not hitting Chicago. Oh well.

I would also be surprised if Famoudou disallowed audio recording - it was always allowed in the classes that I've attended.

FK normally allows audio recording during designated times of his workshop, ie. when he's finishing teaching a rhythm.

that policy should still be in tact for this tour.

That's good news, thanks! That's all that's necessary, too. I don't need hours of recordings, just a short snippet of each part of a rhythm.

Cheers,

Michi.

That's what I have heard several times, too. Famoudou can't stand people who record a whole class, but will take care that the important things can be recorded in the end (that's what eg Uschi told me). I do the same in my own workshops.

Yeah, when I was with Famoudou he always designated a time at the end for recording and was happy to play any part people wanted and always played the rhythm for a few minutes at the end with improvised solos.

it is! although, MK allows you to record his whole class and plays all drum parts in the beginning specifically for recording. unfortunately, no video allowed at all...

"Also, do you know if the book "Mamady Keita the Life of the Djembe" is sold on tour?"

as far as i know, they ran out of the book and everything else they brought for sale (including djembes!), but offered anything on the order form with no shipping charge. they might have some of the products already in san diego...
