You haven't yet heard about the three people who died last week (in Göttingen) while attempting to to defuse an unexploded bomb?!

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/ju ... ills-three

Other articles I checked mentioned people finding old Allied hand grenades with pins intact.

* Note: I'm sure that the numbers have gone up since reunification, as you've already mentioned. Somehow i can't imagine the former E. German regime doing much about this sort of problem. (And I'm sure the situation in the former W. Germany is tied to monies available for clearance of UXBs and other ordnance.)

No, I hadn't heard of that one :(

Yes. As I said, I may also have a distorted view of the situation, seeing that I haven't lived in Germany for almost thirty years and that most of my experience comes from one area.

Certainly, it sounds like the problem is ongoing and real.

Cheers,

Michi.

Yes, it is awful. :(

Apparently, there are still problems in England with UXBs from German raids, though it doesn't happen nearly as often as it did during the late 40s-60s.

And I do think that - like you've said - it can be very hard to imagine that dangers from UXBs, etc. are a reality, if only because postwar rebuilding (etc.) makes things seem and look safe. Who would want to go around thinking that they have to be careful of unmarked bombs or mines on a daily basis? It's very frightening.
