Postby Paul » Sat May 01, 2010 5:08 pm

Any Brits in the house... Looking to find out who is around and good in Britain... Im based in Ireland and generally would be looking towards Europe for workshops (added sunshine factor) would be good to know who is about over there..
I have done workshops with Seckou Keita who is great and heard of Nansady Keita and Baba Kone...

Any info would be appreciated ie feedback or workshops..

Yeah Seckou is....well...Seckou. Nuff said.

Nansady is awesome - there'll be plenty of clips up on youtube if you want to check him out.

Iya Sako is less well known but a great great djembefola from Wassolon. He's really a traditional village player but played with Fankobah (Nanasady's group) in Conakry before coming to England. He did a lot with Mamady when he was over last year and is a regular teacher at many of the drum festivals. Here's a clip:

Samsou is in England too now. He lives in Lancaster.

Oh yeah, Mockoulou Sawane is ace as well.

Last month I visited London where I met Khalifa Conte from Senegal. I know him from his ballet in Toubab Dialow, and he plays a lot in the region Dakar on Malian Bamana parties. He just lives there for 6 months now, and is trying to develop a living as a djembéteacher there. I got his phonenumber, and he is on facebook too. Together with koraplayer Soribab Kanoute he made a beautifull project called Baadinya.

Hi, I've just joined this community, good to be here.

This is obviously a rather subjective contribution to the Djembefolas in Britain thing, but if you're looking for good people to play and study with in Britain you could try my son Hans based in London, teaching weekly evening classes and quite a few Sunday workshops, plus other stuff elsewhere in the UK and at festivals and camps from time to time. He was recently the first UK-born djembefola to be asked to teach djembe "masterclass" at Drum Camp (the 4-day UK event held in July), after 15 years of only native West African players being invited to do so.

Paul, if you're still plugged into this thread, I was in Ireland recently for the Earthsong Camp in Tipperary; I don't know the Irish djembe scene well myself but an Irish djembe player there who spends time in London told me she goes to Hans' Sunday workshops and considers them a good supplement to what she can do in Ireland.

His email is hans@cantab.net

Hello Paul, hello everybody!
My opinion in some words: Nansady is one of the best and nicest djembé players I met in live! If you have the chance to take classes with him, hang out with him or even play with him - do that!!!
Sangbarala has lost a lot when he left - even bigger pity that Solo left soon after.

Nansady is coming to Ireland at the end of the month, looking forward to it.

Your son is a great teacher I have really found his classes good. He does a workshop in Camden town on a Tuesday night along with the sunday workshop in holborn . Well worth a visit.
