Any women building drums?

Postby bubudi » Sun Aug 07, 2011 12:38 pm

lately a lot of people have come forward with tips for drum building, making stands or gadgets, and i was inspired, but also wondering if any of the women on this forum fix their bearing edges, sand and oil/wax their drums, reskin, make rings, rubber bottoms, segesege or even carve or assemble drums?

How about some rouge on the skin? Or a bit of mascara on the verticals? (Michi's chauvinistic contribution of the month… )

But, seriously, Rachel, please speak up and carry the torch! Ali, if you are listening, please speak up too! Time to show those blokes that it ain't the muscle that counts!

Cheers,

Michi ;-)

I just finished reskinning a djembe after many years, that was fun!
No tools or space (or skills?) to do the rings or carve drums.

I'm up for all but the reskinning and pulling verts - too hard on the back and hands, and I don't want to invest in the tools necessary to make it easier. (Also, I don't have the space to do this work.)

However... I do need to learn how to reskin frame drums, so perhaps I'll end up with all the djembe reskinning equipment eventually.

Never say "never"! :)

Edited to add: I know of women who are interested in drum building and even of one who apprenticed with a builder for a while. But I kind of doubt any of them are members of this forum. (We're a pretty small crew when it comes down to it...)

I know of one female drummer in Australia who makes drums for sale and does repairs professionally. There may well be others I'm not aware of.

I've also taught two of my female students how to do it. They come around and use my press (and a bit of help from me) when they need a new skin. While they are not drum makers, they are doing most of the work themselves.

Cheers,

Michi.

I think most people - regardless of their gender - would rather have someone who really knows what they're doing behind the wheel for a reskinning, bearing edge work, etc.

I know that's true for me!
