What's been keeping Carl busy?

Postby Carl » Tue Mar 15, 2011 6:43 pm

here are a couple of videos from one of my current bands.

These are works in progress (not strictly arranged) and it was shot with one camera. I mention that because the videographer put this together in one overnight session! (each)

I tried playing djembe in this group, but just couldn't get past the volume issue.

(my apologies to any darabuka players out there... I did the best I could!)

In other news, the oud player and bass player are two of my best friends!

Nice!!!! :D (I'm subscribed to the utube channel now.)

No need to apologize for your playing, Qarl [;-)]; you're doing just fine. Didn't know you were a mallet player!

The clarinetist is amazing. I like everyone's playing... though (I hope this doesn't come across the wrong way), I wonder about the snared cajon. (Could just be the balance on the recording; FP is very good.)

I want a cymbal setup like FP has + a couple of toms and a snare... (for color, mainly). Brushes on snare + toms would be nice on the 2nd piece especially, but I also realize that space is probably a consideration.

I hope you'll drop a line as to future gigs, etc.

Oh, and... "Two Hammocks" is really nice. Beautiful melody and I like the flute with the keyboards, oud, etc.

Thanks for the feedback all!

My friend Mac (the oud player) and I have been trying to start something for almost a year. The inspiration was to get friend musicians together and see what happens. We started with a Reggae vibe last summer, but the energy never took off.

Then the clarinetist mentioned above came over, and the world/jazz/fusion thing started happening! We are working on a "down tempo" version of Kulandjan which the percussionist (Fabio on Cajon) developed a sweet groove to. (he and I had been working on some of the more interesting feels from West Africa which inspired him. His main area of expertise is more Mideastern and frame drums (he lays down a killer pandero (sp?) groove!))

This particular night was for Mattan (the flute player) who was in the studio making loops for Sony (what they will be used for, I don't know, must be some sort of DJ loop cd or something...?)

There was a videographer and two photographers there that night. One of the photographers was using a 3D camera! (still haven't seen the 3D pics... I suppose I would need the glasses...?)

Mac and I were joking that we have more PR material for this band than in any other group that we've been in, and we havn't even played out yet!

Hypothetically we are looking to play Jonny D's in Boston sometime soon, but no dates are set.

More as things develop...
