Yeah there's a Basque guy in Galway called Gorka who plays one of those. He made it out of lengths of wood and pieces of slate. Very strange playing technique. I haven't seen him out busking with it in a year or two and I only talked to him once so I have no way of contacting him.

Paul - very cool! Marimba-like but with a very full, deep sound - duns would go well with it, I think.

I'd also love to see what this group does with the big Indonesian drums they've got in the back...

I once got to see Brazilian composer/wildman Hermeto Pascoal and his group playing a "marimba" made of cement blocks. They used aluminum tubes of varying lengths to strike the blocks. The sound was very clear and sweet, almost bell-like in some ways.

This vid is pretty cool - subtitles in Basque only, though...

Yea I saw these in the basque country this year... have a video somewhere...

It literally looked like planks of wood. The one I saw, just had 2 pieces of wood and 2 players...

The Rhythmic structures where pretty simple, but effective...
