Learn how to play it and dont be one of the 5000000000000000 people in dublin using it as a drum kit... At least it took the pressure off the djembe as the most hated instrument here... :D

Nah only joking play 'we will rock you' till your hearts content...

They got some complex beats

I thought bad bodhran was the most hated drum in Ireland. And perhaps the world, LOL.

Clickety clickety clickety clickety. Off tempo, of course.

Hah! Rachel, I'm learning to play bones - they might be the most hated instrument in ireland. :D

James - check around for Guillermo McGill's flamenco cajon DVDs, especially if you have a cajon with snares. There are some good videos of Peruvian-style playing (no snares) on YouTube, and some of flamenco-style. (although it seems like most everyone who's uploading is fixated on what Paul says - using it like drum kit. Ah well.)

Michi,

I LOVE Expert Village's videos. That is how I learned all my sweet djembe moves.

Love,
Rachel

Pleased to hear it! Did you learn the "energy transfer" one too? ;-)

Cheers,

so i guess you know both types of drumming then, syncopatic and solo beats ;)
also how to kill the sound from your drum and how to count like a 2 year old 'one-two-one-two-hoo'

Y'know, I watched some vids from Expert Village last night - on how to play tambourine, in a variety of styles.

The guy in the vids was pretty accomplished. :)

Their editorial board must have had a really bad day then ;)

I was being facetious though—I'm sure that among the thousands of videos, there must be some good ones. It's just that the djembe ones I've seen at Expert Village are mostly garbage.

Cheers,

Michi.

I think you should play that bodhran with a knife is a pretty common request...

Bones are fairly rare to see at gigs

it seems as if bones are hated by lots of session players in the US. :)

Bones are quite hard to play well. Much like anything else I suppose, but for those with a 'casual interest' in sitting in on sessions, a pair of spoons will provide the required annoyance to the other musicians without the hassle of having to make any attempt at rhythm. anyone who is actually interested in learning bones properly will have enough sense not to take them out in public until they actually know how.

Very true, I think - and the Irish style of playing them is (imo) especially difficult.

They're a great instrument when the player knows what he/she is doing, but when not...!!!
