fatoumata kouyate was born in conakry, guinea, to the original jeli (griot) family, the kouyates.

from a young age, fatoumata fell in love with the bala and she decided to learn the art. her father taught her, despite this being a direct challenge to the tradition. she remains one of the few jelimuso balafolaw.
