Drumset

Postby bops » Thu May 21, 2009 3:26 am

I'll start off with a few of my favorites:

Elvin Jones
Tony Williams
Roy Haynes
Max Roach
Art Blakey

As you can see, I'm into jazz drums. I'm curious what you other jembe fanatics are into when it comes to drumset.

Ooh... another jazz fan here, though not a set player. Everyone you mentioned is fantastic, of course.

Some lesser-known folks (some of them younger) that I like:

Lewis Nash
Winard Harper
Jeff Hamilton
Joey Baron
Tutty Moreno (from Brazil, one of the best set players I've ever heard)
Jack DeJohnette
Guillermo McGill (from Spain)
Matt Wilson
Susie ibarra

And from the bebop era:
Kenny Clarke!

That's harder, bubudi!

Johnny Dyani - jazz drummer, originally from South Africa - is great. He lived in exile for decades, not sure if he's back there now or has stayed in Europe.

Tony Allen of afrobeat fame would be a notable example. There are a lot of good mbalax players, afro-jazz (Super Biton, anyone?), etc etc... but I'm not familiar with too many in particular. The drumset hasn't been around in Africa for very long (relatively speaking), and it's a very expensive instrument to import, so they aren't all that common. As a result, drumset hasn't developed too much over there. Check out this drumset from Les Etoiles de Boulibinet:

The kick drum and toms are all hand carved, rope tuned with cow skins. The snare drum? A jembe of course. :dundun:

that is crazy, i love it! a friend of mine had a stand built to attach a kick pedal to his dununba and sangban. i'm not sure i like the idea of hitting the djembe with a stick tho.

Melikes the African drumset. :D

I put together a boumou dunba and sangban as well as three metal duns i got cheap from senegal to get to a similar thing, and i play it with curved sticks. I have no drumset experience whatsoever and i can't dissociate hands and feet so it hasn't got a kick, but i can tell you it's a hell of a lot of fun, and the sound is THUNDEROUS !

Max Roach, Joey Barron, Jeff 'tain' watts, Elivn!, Milford Graves (Very OUT THERE! :smokin: ) Jack Dejonette... so many drummers so little time...

I was fortunate to meet Loui Bellson many years ago in college, such a gentle man and a great player.
I also met Allen Dawson who was a great teacher (that's about it for my brushes with fame in the drumset world)

The drum also waltzes (Max Roach) had a huge impact on my playing, opened me up to the melodic abilities of the kit.

In the end I got into the more "free" players Bob Gulloti and Milford G. Joey B. to a lesser degree.

Sadly, free jazz gives my wife fits, so I haven't been listening to much lately outside of my 50+ min. ride to work in the morning/evening.

Hmmm Enough talk, must play...

After posting that, I was thinking that "citizen 'tain" needed to go back into the car's CD player...

Another set of recordings that I've liked has been Jack Dejohnetts work with Keith Jarret.

Put me down as a Tain fan.

I also really like Milford's playing, although (at times) he's too out for my tastes (or maybe my ability to follow - or both!)

Another player I enjoy: Bob Moses. He's done some really subtle, melodic things on set that I like very much.

Lars from metalica has held my admiration and respect. Ever since I realised I could only keep up with him if I had a double kick and he was playing a single. That and travis barker, I like to think I bring a bit of there influence into my djembe playing.
