I like the Keith Jarrett Trio, although I admit I haven't listened to their CDs in many years. It may be time to dust those off.

Speaking of trios, I've been listening to an amazing Israeli bassist named Avishai Cohen a lot lately. e2c, have you ever checked him out? If not, definitely do so. I think you would like his stuff - he draws major Middle Eastern influences into his compositions. Overall I would highly recommend the disc Adama, which features a quintet. For drumset fans, check out his trio's Gently Disturbed. The drummer's name is Mark Guiliana and he brings some serious mental gymnastics. I would recommend the latter album to any fans of the Bad Plus.

Thanks for the recs, bops!

Re. Avishai, I love his 1st disc (Adama), but am not as much of a fan of his more recent work. (Or maybe it's more accurate to say that I like some tracks on each of his last several discs, but not all of them...)

Double recommend on that! there are some sick grooves on those CDs... no need to solo when your pocket is that deep!

> stanton moore - check out his side projects over his galactic stuff

Agree'd on that, the galactic stuff is nice, but Fly'n the coop is where it's at!

> ?uestlove - roots drummer, human drum macine. the roots are the house band for jimmy fallon

I've heard of this guy and have been meaning to check it out... I'll consider this yet another reccomendation...

I reckon my favourite drummer is John French, a.k.a Drumbo from Captain Beefheart's Magic Band. The music that those guys made in the late sixties and early seventies was amazing. Check out the albums Trout Mask Replica and Lick My Decals Off Baby. There's some really nuts drumming on those two albums, especially on Lick My Decals Off Baby. The band had two drummers for that album, French and Art Tripp a.k.a Ed Marimba. Crazy stuff.
Here's a video of him doing some soloing at a Magic Band reunion concert (minus Captain Beefheart)

And here's a video from back in the day, low quality video but outstanding music. Really freaky...
