Donso music in Sanankoro

Postby bubudi » Sat May 28, 2011 8:30 am

the musician is adama sidibe, a traditional hunter from the wasulu area in the south of mali. he is sidiki camara's cousin. although he's crooning in the hunter's style, that's a kamelengoni he's playing.

Nice video.. strange sounding ngoni, really short neck on it, nearly sounds metallic..

Nice...

@ bubudi - I would call his singing Wasulu-style rather than donso style. Not really donso style to me.

@ Paul - looks and sounds fairly typical for a Wasulu kamale n'goni... the neck could be a couple of inches shorter than most, but it might also be the perspective of the camera. Could the metallic sound be coming from the tuning keys? It also sounds like there may be some discord between the two n'gonis... that may be contributing as well.

bops, thanks muchly!

While I admittedly know zip about donso music, I do like Wasulu-style singing and that is what it sounds like to me as well...

@ Bops: you're right Bops, the style is more Wassoulou. But he Adama is a donso as well... So the best of both I guess.
