Wich rhythm is this?

Postby iten » Mon Jun 04, 2012 7:37 am

Hi,guys!
I've just watched this video:
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xbrihw ... eJVOak#_=_
and liked the dununs parts very much. I started to search the name of this rhythm but unfortunatly didn't find anything about it. In the begining of the record MK is telling something about this rhythm but my French is only enough to say "merci") So maybe someone can help and translate this text into English? I'm very interesting in MK words. Like I understand this rhythm was composed by Mamady but I could be wrong because of my knowledge in French.

Thnx,
Iten.

That rhythm is one of Mamady's compositions. It's called "Matoto", after the suburb in Conakry where Mamady has his house.

Sorry, I don't speak French. There are other people on this board who do. Can anyone help? I'd like to know too! :)

This is a really great video! (Well, except for the chatter in the background, LOL.)

I think it would be very challenging for me to play dundun this way since I am so used to ballet style. But I love how the three dunduns have to fit (and stay) together.

Thanks for sharing it!

It's quite hard to hear because of all the background noise but here's the gist:

He starts off by saying he has just taught a 'traditional' rhythm and now he is going to teach an original creation. He goes on to say that every traditional rhythm you can think of was once created by someone, and that at the time they were created no-one knew that they would become traditional in 200 years. Maybe, then, in another 200 yerars this rhythm will be 'traditional'.

He then talks a bit about Matoto (his area of Conakry) and how it is surrounded by people of all nationalities. I can't hear some crucial words in this bit so I'm not 100% sure what he is saying here. I think his point is that Matoto has become a melting-pot of cultures. This rhythm is called Matoto after hid area of Conakry.

That's about it I think.

He gave pretty much the same speech when I studied these new rhythms with him a couple of years ago - that rhythms become traditional and that he hopes his new rhythms will become traditional in 200 years. You could argue that it's happening already, seeing as here we are discussing them.

Thnx, djembeweaver!
I think that MK rhythms are already traditional) Especially if one doesn't know the origin of rhythm but knows how to play it or if we can find some tutorial lessons about rhythm in youtube.
Finally I decided to transcribe Matoto but don't know if I understand it correctly. If someone is familiar with this rhythm, please, let me know if there are mistakes.

But ufortunatly I don't know how to attach mp3 and jpg. files here. Can someone help?

when you post a reply, there is a blue field under the white box where you write your answer. its even under the buttons for save", "preview", and "submit". next to "options" you can read "upload attachments". click that and you can search on your computer for the mp3 and jpeg files. just add the file and submit the post...

iten:

as far as matoto parts go, here's what mamady taught a group of us in 2011, which matches the video as well. note that the sangban bell has a nice pickup, which creates a situation where the bell and the stick don't play together for two hits. also, the djembe sounds in the percussion studio transcription aren't the sound pattern that mamady showed us (see below).

Code: Select all
         1 - - - 2 - - - 3 - - - 4 - - - 1 - - - 2 - - - 3 - - - 4 - - -
djembe1: T - S t - s T t S - S b T t S s B - - - - - S s B - - - - - S s
djembe2: S - - b S s T t S - - b S s T t S - - b S s T t S - - b S s T t

  sbell: - * - * - * - * * - * - * - * * - * - * - * - * * - * - * - * *
sangban: o - o - - - - o - - o - - - o - - o - - - - - - x - - - x - - -
  kbell: * - * * - * - * * - * - * - * * - * - * - * - * * - * - * - * -
kenkeni: x - - o - o - - o - - - o - - o - - - o - o - - x - - - x - - -
  dbell: - * - * - * - * * - * - * - * * - * - * - * - * * - * - * - * *
dununba: - o - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - o o

hope this helps. have fun with this rhythm, it's groovy.

best,
-brian

You can find a long intro for Matoto with six or seven phrases (not that easy to play) on Mamady's Volume 4 DVD.

Cheers,

Michi.
