Where to hear traditional african music

Postby youdneverthink » Wed Mar 16, 2011 3:01 pm

Hi

Is anybody aware of a place on the internet where one could listen to traditional african music? I've tried all the normal internet radios to no avail. If there is no such recource then where would I find recordings to buy? What labels or artist names should I look for?

I want to teach my kids about african drumming and would like them to hear some good examples.

Regards

There is lots of resources on i-tunes. There was a link to some free albums on this site a while back, really good drumming, not sure where the link is at now though.

Here's a few I've gotten off iTunes that I liked

Burkina Ka Di

Djembe by Ye Lassina Coulibaly

Fadouba Oulare

Hamana FoliKan (2000)

Mali Drums: Old Masters

Any of the albums by Adama Drame, I like Sindi

This should be a good start :)

is Adama's music traditional???
same for djembé players from Burkina...

better try some youtube films maybe using a converter.
have a look at: danielkonate, mamadykamara, guedom, archetypo, buriburiborn, djembemoves, gbereduka2 and the added ones.

As long as we're talking about iTunes, here are the albums I've gotten from there:

Fore-Fote - Wonbere, great
Madou Djembe - Percussions D'Afrique, different and good
Mamady Keita - Wassolon, great
Djembe Kaan - Concert, terrible
Mamady Keita - Afo, great
Mamady Ijalit Keita - African Drums - Traditional Mandingue Rhytms, good
Fodé Seydou Bangoura - Fakoly 1, excellent
