What is the rhythm in "La Cloche de Hamana"?

Postby Mikeleza » Sat Jul 09, 2011 6:20 pm

Can someone tell me which dundunba rhythm is played on Famoudou Konate's album "Hamana Foli Kan" in the song "La Cloche de Hamana" ?

Its such a masterpiece!

here's one i recorded in guinea in 2005.

billy on dununba, diarra on sangban, nansady on djembe, Fams on the cloche.

sweet performance...they played some other classics and then brought out MK for some dununba madness at the end.

Duga,
That is an amazing recording of an amazing performance! Did you record it? What gear did you use?
Thanks,
Evan

i did record it.

i used ADK TLs set to the cardioid pattern at XY. my mic stand was about 4' tall and dead center in the front row.

i ran the mics into an digital mod'd Edirol UA-5>optical out>nomad jb3.

Wow, those are some serious mics to take to Guinea, but it definitely worked. Definitely not pocket recorder stuff.

yea kinda overkill really. i recorded sessions for a group in Dubreka as well as all the big fetes and performances i saw. i had a smaller setup for classes.

the next time i went, i downsized to AKG 480 bodies with cardioid and hyper caps but then added an HD video cam so i was probably still hauling the same weight. i did more video recording then audio my last time around.

if i were to go back again, i'd definitely bring a video camera and one of the newer portable recorders with some small external mics.

That's great input. I'll definitely bring my lil Sony, but I was leaning toward getting a better digital still cam ( that still takes HD video) rather than a dedicated video camera. Now you've got me thinking. What would you consider "little" mics-- a couple AKG 1000's?

AKG1000S are still on the long side if i recall correctly. they are def smaller than any beer can large diaphrams. for super small/stealth, check out micro mics like these: http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-b ... y/110/mics

i'm still a fan of 1 mic single point stereo mic like the AT822. cheap, sounds good, built tough. i've had mine for 7 years and it's been all over the world with me.

Duga, awesome recording man! Thanks for sharing. Great dunun arrangement.

What are the chances we can cajole you into posting some of the dununba with Mamady?
