That's a good microphone. It's been replaced with the AT8022. That one is identical, except that it can take phantom power as well as run with a battery. (The 822 can't use phantom power.)

You can buy it for around $380, which is excellent value and, unless you are into professional recording, it's likely to be plenty good enough.

Your guys' idea of cheap is different than mine. I'd put $380 in the "mid-priced" category. I'll see if I can find one used. I've also seen good reviews on the Rode NT-4, but those are around $400 too.

That's a very good microphone, probably a tad better than the 8022. Same size as the 8022 (except a little longer). But, at 460g, it's almost three times the weight of the 8022, which may bother you when you are travelling. At $530, it's also $150 more expensive than the 8022.

Thanks for the tip on the 822. I found one on eBay for $125 and it's on it's way to me. 8)

I'm starting another thread on recording the W African experience. Your experience and opinions would be greatl appreciated.
