I don't quite understand the goal, but this is zaouli, James, I posted this video in the zaouli thread. It's the binary zaouli, and Thomas Guei and his dancers rock it.
Are you sure thats not Gbe-Gbe? The accompaniments were the same and I thought I heard the call and the pedalages the dancers were doing looked like what I've seen of the dance. Also the whole back and forth between Thomas and the dancers looked a lot like what i've seen of the the way that you do gbe-gbe. I'm not 100% but I know some dancers that would recognize the moves and will ask them.
well, I stand corrected. When I posted it in the zaouli thread, nobody corrected me, I wasn't 100% sure then, so I assumed it woul be zaouli. Never heard of gbe gbe: ivorian rhythm as well, right?
Yes and although I learned the rhythm in abidjan in 2001, I don't know much about its cultural significance, other than its usually danced with the dancers holding 2 sticks with animal hair on the end, much like the zaolie wands...don't know if anyone knows their name.
Just thought I would share. This is the temate we learned from Kevin Meyame of Tanably. Originally from Man, Ivory Coast, lived in Asheville, NC for about four years, and now lives in france.
