Tinnitus treatment with music

Postby Kendall » Sun Jan 03, 2010 8:15 pm

An article in "Dutch", can't find the English yet, about a German research into the treatment of Tinnitus by:

Playing (listening) to music with the specific frequency of the individuals tinnitus filtered OUT (from plus 1 to minus 1 octave from center freq.). Listening in this manner causes stimulation of the neurological functions in the brain around those frequencies which should be, but are not there. This in turn helps with the patients tinnitus.

There was supposedly an article in the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences" but haven't found it yet. Meanwhile, here's the link to the Dutch Article:

If you find an English or German version, could you post a link please? Seeing that I have tinnitus, I'm naturally interested...

Thanks,

Michi.

Just found this:
English Report of "Notched" Music for Tinnitus

This could be done perhaps with a graphic or parametric Equalizer and calming music of choice.
Anyone with an audio home or pro studio should be able to "notch" some recorded music appropriately.

There are other "music" therapies but they are not "Notched" and only offer temporary help.

Hope this helps.

there was a book i read about 5 years ago which described a therapy for tinnitus using music by mozart filtered/equalised to particular frequencies. other positive effects (e.g. increased concentration) were also noted. headphones must be used for this to work. this therapy has been around since the 1970s. back then the therapy was delivered via cassettes, and walkmans weren't available yet. when they were, it was quite a while before they were capable of the frequency range necessary for therapeutic benefit. there was some discussion towards the end of the book about cd's not being appropriate for this kind of therapy, as only an analogue recording source could reproduce the therapeutic effect.

the exact name of the book escapes me right now. i'll come back to this topic later with more details.

Joudry, Patricia (1999). Sound therapy : music to recharge your brain. Sydney: Sound Therapy Australia. ISBN 1876315245.

while looking this up in my library catalogue i found that the author's daughter rafaele wrote a more current book (which I haven't read). it includes a bibliography and webliography.

Joudry, Rafaele (2007). Triumph over tinnitus (2nd ed.). Gerringong, NSW: Sound Therapy International. 214pp. ISBN 9780957924635.

incidentally, this programme is now delivered through cds. i guess they found that the therapy still works with digital media. i'm not sure whether the recording device was analogue or digital, though.

some links found on rafaele joudry's website:

Lately I've been trying to find some info on the tree ginkgo biloba and read somewhere that some form of ginko can be used for some tinnitus treatments. It didn't really elaborate on that. I'm gonna try get a perscription for some ginko and check it out. It is usually known as a memory enhancer but has many other medical benefits.(prob why its illegal in ireland).

Any pleasures involved that are even vaguely carnal in nature? If so, that would make it illegal straight away... ;)

Its a bummer. Usually stuff is illegal cos it works and may interfere with some medical industry sales etc.

Back to tinittus i had the pleasure of taking Quinine in Gambia a year and a half ago for malaria and the side effect is you get tinnitus from it. That was pretty strange for a few days.

gingko is pretty widely sold across the world, it's even available by vitamin companies in tablet form (and has been for well over a decade). i'm surprised it should be illegal in ireland. if it were a threat to drug companies, wouldn't it be illegal in other countries as well?

here's a british medical journal article i was able to find on ginkgo's use in treating tinnitus. not too promising.
