Wow. I found this board and thread through an email. Imagine arriving and seeing the posting on Wolossodon and Jondon from my blog. I'm the owner of dance1400.wordpress.com. It's a blog I created for the African Dance Classes I teach at a local community college.
I wrote the posting to clear up some of the issues discussed here. There was a difference between slavery among the Mande people and slavery in the American South.
In the South, slaves were not legally viewed as humans. They were commodities, like an axe, a piece of land or livestock.
The Mande system didn't deny the humanity of slaves, but relegated them to the bottom of the social structure. The Wolosso fared better than the Jon, who were traded, but the Wolosso were still at the bottom.
And yes, Wolossodon is sexual. The field tape I received from Dr. Hoffman isn't lewd, but there is a sexual connotation. And a jali friend of mine once told me that wolosso women danced in a sexual way for their masters.
Hope this helps. Thanks for reading my blog.
