Soli Djembe Solo

Postby James » Sat Mar 01, 2008 6:05 pm

Lineage - this is a solo I was taught a few years back by a French guy (in Thailand) who told me that he studied with an advanced student of Mamady Keita.

I don't know if it is a traditional solo or improvised, but I got the impression it is a traditional one.

Any of the phrases can be repeated an even number of times (because of the dunduns, which I didn't do with him as we were in Thailand).

Phrase 1 must be played and even number (2,4, 6) of times.

Changing from phrase 1 to phrase 2 occurs on the 4th pulse of phrase 1 indicated with capital B. This 4th pulse is the start of phrase 2 (BSS).

Phrase 2 is also played an even number of times (as are all the phrases). For phrase 2, the exit is on 3rd pulse. Instead of playing -ss as per phrase 2 you play t-s and continue with phrase 3 from there.

All other transitions are straight forward.

1) tts--s--sB-s
2) Bssr-t-ssb--
3) --sr-tt-ss-t
---t-ss-b--ss-b
4) --stsstsstss
---tsss-b--ss-b
5) --s2ts2ts2ts
---2tss-b--ss-b

Is solo familiar to anyone? I've done the first phrase with Famoudou for Soli and a few other rhythms before.

Does anybody have any other solo phrases for soli?
I live in a world of infinite possibilities.

seems to me that the 2nd phrase is wrong and the phrases after it are starting late too. you can learn this solo on mamady's 1st video instructional series on vhs. pay attention to the microtiming.
